ANDREW BIRK

Andrew investigates the potential created in the space between his own physicality and the surface of an artwork, bringing forth strength, vitality, affliction or torment as a confrontational presence and a testament to one's own aliveness. He uses circumstantial restraints as conditions, turning obstacles into objectives to be overthrown in the exercise of making a painting. The self-imposed dynamic of overcoming limitations is the backbone of a succession of bodies of work that unfold in distinct materialities, where the method becomes the language and the surface resonates the performance.
Recent presentations include Portals at Galeria Alegria, Barcelona (2026); Lugar Entre Lugares at Karen Huber Gallery, Mexico City (2025); Ephemera Forever, New Low, Tokyo, 2025; Best Wishes, Plague, Kazan (2025); Kin at Spiritvessel, Espinavessa (2024); Jumping Off A Mountain Sideways at Season 4 Episode 6, London (2024); and To Romanticize With Indecision at Cassina Projects, Milan (2024).
Institutionally, he has exhibited at HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Herning, Denmark; The Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, Forth Worth, Texas; Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City; Australian Center For Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Vestjyllands Kunstpavillon, Videbæk, Denmark; Huset For Kunst of Design, Holstebro, Denmark; Museo Del Chopo, Mexico City, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACO), Oaxaca.
Birk co-directs Spiritvessel, a self-institutionalized center for the production of contemporary art in Espinavessa, Spain. This is the fifth exhibition platform he has created.
In his free time, Andrew is permanently rebuilding an old stone house in the Catalan countryside, and weeding the garden.
